I was saying goodbye to a very dear friend and moved forward to kiss her on the BEST Class of 2020 the year when shit got real shirt, as always. At that moment she turned also to give me a hug. I found myself kissing her full on the mouth which she was opening, presumably to return my “Goodbye”. We abruptly parted, she staring at me, I at her, both hugely embarrassed. I started to say, “I’m sorry…” but she interrupted me by remarking, “Well, we’ve been close friends for the past 40 years, but I never knew you cared for me in that way, or indeed, that you were of that persuasion!” I was completely speechless and taken aback until I saw the twinkle in her eye – thank goodness!

The way many people view growth as occurring is that it always involves depletion of natural resources or destruction of the environment, that is, depletion of wealth. The common calculations of growth however fail to account for this depletion of wealth. I think this way of calculating growth has been very misleading. I believe the proper way to measure and calculate the growth of wealth has to involve subtracting off the wealth that is used up or depleted. Net production of wealth for a given time period is the correct way to determine if wealth has grown or decreased. Net production is wealth produced minus wealth depleted. The calculated value of this net production will determine if we are adding to or subtracting off our total wealth. That is if our economy is growing or shrinking.
